The "tunnel movie" approach is absolutely amazing. I've yet to see it in person, but that might change this Fall.

I think I mentioned Pleo in conversation a few days ago. I have to admit, its motions are light years beyond what I've seen in other consumer robots, but they still have a jerkiness that leaves me with a disappointing impression of "machine-ness." I suppose I'll have to see one in person.

EDIT - OK, I searched for "pleo" on YouTube and found some videos that are downright adorable. I stand happily corrected. :)

marathon monks

As described in this article, the "marathon monks" of Hiei are beyond dedicated. Their training includes self-inflicted physical hardships that seem utterly inhuman.

I never explicitly thought of running as an act of spiritual devotion. It always seemed part exercise, part stress relief, and part obligation. Still, once in a while, I could almost swear the self disappears and I get a glimpse of the transcendent.
